Stewart's
original firehall circa 1912. This building is now home of
Stewart's popular museum. Inside, you will find information
relating to Stewart's early days, mining and a series of posters, etc.
relating to many of the movies that have been shot in Stewart.
The
Stewart Information Centre was constructed during
1996. A popular
place for tourists and locals alike, browse through the information held
within and take time to walk on the boardwalk and enjoy the beauty of
the Portland Canal.
The Marmot Trading Centre, located on main street is now a gift shop. Originally, this building, now restored to its earlier appearance, was a supply shop.
The
Ripley Creek Inn is located on Main Street a block down from the King
Edward Hotel and Motel. The rooms within the Ripley Creek Inn have
been restored to original. Here
is a shot of this famous inn in the winter.
Stewart
is located at the end of the Portland Canal. Whales have been seen
swimming in the canal from time to time. The Portland Canal is Canada's Most Northerly Ice Free Port and can accommodate almost any ship.
The eagle perched on top of the post appears to be waiting for
something.
Fishing
anyone? These folks are enjoying the incredible
scenery available from the water. They are fishing from their
canoe; wonder what they caught!
Some
fishers stand at the mouth of Bear River to catch Coho Salmon, or
"Pinks". If you visit us in the winter, try some ice fishing at Meziadin
Lake. In the summer time, bring your own boat or try your luck with one
of our many fishing charter companies.
Like
any other place in Canada, Stewart also celebrates July 1st! Our
parades may not be as long as those in the larger cities but our
patriotism is just as large. Since Stewart is located so close to
Hyder, Alaska we hold July 1st to 4th activities; always fun for all age
groups. Come and join us!
Every
second year, Stewart hosts a rodeo. Cowboys come from all over to
compete. Next rodeo date to be announced.
The scenery surrounding Stewart is bountiful and majestic. The following pictures will give an idea of the majesty of the mountains, the ice-chilling beauty of winter and the splendor of the spring as it breaks into summer.
This
picture was taken from the top of one of the local areas and shows the
expanse of the townsite of Stewart and as well, an indication of the
beauty that surrounds us.
Also view this picture of the
townsite.

Bears are often viewed around Stewart and area. The first photo
shows a mother bear showing her cubs how to fish for salmon. This
can be seen often at the Bear Viewing platform in Hyder during the
summer months. The second picture was taken around Stewart as
well, often, Bears are seen within Stewart and Hyder.

If you travel through Hyder, Alaska and then travel back into BC, you
will arrive at the Salmon Glacier. This glacier is the 9th largest
in the world and is the only glacier that has ever been traversed.
Many miners have travelled back and forth over the glacier, taking their
pack horses laden with supplies to their mining camps. Although
the glacier is not as large as it used to be, it is still a sight to
behold.
Winter brings many beautiful showcases. Some pictures were taken at our annual tree lighting which is held in December.
The Boardwalk is situated over the estuary. It is a great walk for viewing birds or just to get a little touch of nature. You'll find more photos of the Boardwalk by following link at the bottom of this page.
The following photographs are from our history collection. Further information will be provided about these pictures in the near future.
